The Charlottesville Scholarship Program awards two types of undergraduate scholarships: Charlottesville Promise Scholarships and Preston Coiner Scholarships. Both are available for low- and moderate-income people who meet eligibility requirements and who are in need of financial assistance to attend an accredited two- or four-year college, technical school or certification program. CSP pairs all scholars with local adult Navigators who support students throughout their academic career. Both types of scholarships are renewable.
Charlottesville Promise Scholarships: Charlottesville Promise Scholars receive up to $1,500 as a first-year award, and annual increases of up to $500 with successful academic progress. A Charlottesville Promise Scholar can expect to receive up to $9,000 over the course of a typical 4-year undergraduate program.
Preston Coiner Scholarships: Preston Coiner Scholars can expect to receive a first-year award in the amount of 4% of the Coiner endowment as of January 1 of the current year rounded to the nearest $100. In 2016, the Preston Coiner Scholarship was $4,000. In recognition of Preston Coiner’s abiding interest in local history, applicants must submit an essay of 500-1,000 words about Charlottesville or Albemarle County history.
