2011 Spring Scholarship Recipients
Shaniece Bradford wants to study criminal justice in college. Her goal is to become an FBI agent. While in high school, she has been a clerk at the Goodwill store in Charlottesville, working 20 hours a week while maintaining a strong grade point average. Shaniece is a motivated, engaged student who also is a member of the sideline cheerleading squad. She will attend Virginia State University.
James Dowell plans to study marketing in college. He wants to use that degree to come back to work at the John Paul Jones Arena where he currently works with the street team marketing department. James will be the first member of his family to attend college and his high school counselor says he has what it takes to make his dream come true. He will attend Richard Bland College of the College of William and Mary.
Champrea Frye plans to study nursing. Her goal is to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. Champrea has participated in many extracurricular activities at Charlottesville High School including the National Honor Society and the National Society of Black Engineers. She also is very active in the youth program at Zion Union Baptist Church. In the fall Champrea will begin her studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Latoya Hughes plans to study social work. She is praised by her teachers for her dedication, focus and work ethic, keeping up with her studies while working part-time at Kroger. In fact, she has worked since the age of 13. Latoya is very dedicated to her family and is anticipating becoming the first member of her family to attend college. She will attend St. Augustine’s College in the fall.
Richard Washington plans to study music education, sharing the passion for music he has had since a young child. He would like to become a high school band director and teacher. Richard has been an integral part of the award-winning CHS Marching Knights and the school’s wind ensemble. He is praised for his leadership and academic skills. Richard will attend Old Dominion University.
Valerie Washington plans to major in economics and international education. With that knowledge, she anticipates working in Washington, D.C. or helping the less fortunate overseas. Since her freshman year, Valerie has opted for the most challenging courses. She is particularly interested in closing the achievement gap and ensuring success for all students. Christopher Newport College is her choice.
Christopher Yates plans to study criminal justice and fire science along with theology, combining his interests in helping people on multiple levels. Christopher has overcome many obstacles to become an involved, motivated student. He has worked at Giant Foods since 2006 and is a volunteer fire fighter with the Charlottesville Fire Department. Chris will attend Bluefield College.

2010 Adult Scholarship Recipients
Stephanie Patterson loves children. She has seven children of her own (ages 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 11 and 9) and spends her work hours supporting children with special needs as a teaching assistant at Jackson Via Elementary School. “Sometimes I feel like being at work is a break because I’m so busy with my own kids when I’m home,” she says. Stephanie is completing the final courses she needs to enroll in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) program at the University of Virginia, with the ultimate goal of becoming a special education teacher.
Fofo Edem Tatteh – Edem is from the small West African nation of Togo (slightly smaller than West Virginia, with a population of approximately 6.7 million), where French is the official language. With English as his second language, Edem received a visa to attend college in America. He works in housekeeping at the Omni Hotel on the Downtown Mall and is studying engineering at PVCC because of his “good skills in math and physics.”
Tara Ingram – Originally from Turkey, Tara came to the United States 12 years ago, after working in the U.S. General Consulate office in Istanbul, where she polished her English. In 2009, she taught Turkish language classes at U.Va. After working as a substitute teacher in the Charlottesville schools over the past two years, she has decided to become a school counselor. “I strongly believe that I have a talent to reach children at any age.” She intends to earn a master’s degree in counseling after finishing her bachelor’s degree at Mary Baldwin College, with help from CCSP. “This scholarship is such an uplifting energy,” she notes. “I don’t look at it as just a sum of money. It helps me get up and go.”
2010 Spring Scholarship Recipients
Michaela Banks, rising senior at Virginia State University, is majoring in business administration. Michaela worked nearly four years for Michael’s and that has influenced her plans to work in marketing for a large company. She also dreams of creating a program to inspire young girls to attend college.
Corey Blackwell, graduating senior at CHS, will attend Norfolk State University in the fall. He plans to study psychology. His career goal is to become a social worker. Corey gets high marks for taking challenging courses and working hard to do his best.
Kyra Brock, graduating senior at CHS, will attend Johnson and Wales in the fall. Her dream is to be a successful event planner. She hopes to study in Spain her junior year to learn how other cultures arrange their events and celebrate milestones such as marriage. “I want to make people happy and to help them enjoy their special events,” she writes.
Celica Cowan , graduating senior at CHS, will attend Norfolk State University to study psychology. She hopes to obtain a master’s degree in teaching and inspire students to overcome difficulties they face. Celica works full time at the Nook but has maintained excellent grades. She is highly thought of for her “unrelenting will to succeed in the face of adversity.”
Asia Crawford, graduating senior at CHS, will attend Ferrum College to study accounting and business management. She hopes to become an accountant for a production company and later own a club for teens. She likes to make people laugh. Asia is praised as a disciplined student possessing keen insights and the ability to think critically.
Louise (Louie) Glasgow, graduating senior at CHS, will attend Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall. Her goal is to become a nurse. Louie founded the CHS “Do Something” Club, reflecting her intense sense of community responsibility and her desire to help students help others. In choosing her career, Louie wants to help people rather than just work for a paycheck.
Tyrell Laury, graduating senior at CHS, will attend Old Dominion University in the fall. He will study business in preparation for his dream of owning a chain of barbershops. Tyrell has attended CATEC and is completing a two-year barbering program there. This program gave him his focus and helped encourage him to work hard to prepare for college.
