Seven CHS Seniors to Be Recognized for CCPS Scholarships
Shaniece Bradford wants to become an FBI agent when she graduates from college. Champrea Frye’s goal is to be a pediatric nurse practitioner.
These two are among seven Charlottesville High School seniors who have received scholarships from the Charlottesville Community Scholarship Program to help them with their college finances.
City Council will recognize them at its meeting on May 16, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. The meeting is open to the public.
Now entering its 10th year, CCSP was first endowed by City Council in 2001 “to help deserving high school graduates and working adults in the Charlottesville community afford the cost of college to enhance their education and enrich their lives.” The original grant of $250,000 has now more than doubled, according to board chair Linda Seaman. The program awards grants ranging from $500 to $2500, she added.
The board is pleased to announce the following list of recipients:
Bradford, who has been working as a clerk and plans to study criminal justice;
James Dowell, the first member of his family to attend college, who plans to study marketing;
Frye, who plans to study nursing in order to be a pediatric nurse practitioner;
Latoya Hughes, who works part time in a supermarket and plans to study social work;
Richard Washington, who plans to study music with the aim of becoming a high school teacher and band director;
Valerie Washington, who will major in economics and international education with the hope of working in Washington, D.C., or overseas;
Christopher Yates, who has served as a volunteer firefighter and plans to study criminal justice and fire science.
For more information, call Seaman at 434-973-8753.
(NOTE: The students will be available for interviews and photographs at the City Council meeting.)
